What is Alzheimer's disease?

Alzheimer's Disease is a progressive, degenerative brain disorder. Several changes occur in the brain of the person living with this disease which causes certain functions or abilities to be lost. Once lost, these abilities can rarely be relearned. Alzheimer's Disease does not affect a person’s ability to acknowledge, respond to and experience feeling such as joyfulness, annoyance, fear, apprehension, love or sorrow.

One in thirteen Canadians over the age of 65 has Alzheimer's Disease or related dementia.

Warning signs:

  • Memory loss that affects day to day function.
  • Difficulty performing familiar tasks.
  • Problems with language.
  • Problems with abstract thinking.
  • Disorientation of time and place.
  • Poor or decreased judgment.
  • Misplacing things.
  • Changes in moods and behaviors.
  • Personality changes.
  • Loss of initiative.

Myth and Fact :

Myth: Only old people can get Alzheimer's Disease

Fact: Alzheimer's Disease can affect people in their 40’s or 50’s.

Myth: Memory loss means Alzheimer's Disease

Fact: Not everyone with memory problems has Alzheimer's Disease. Memory loss combined with other symptoms should be discussed with your doctor.

Myth: Everyone with Alzheimer's Disease is violent 

Fact: Alzheimer's Disease affects each person differently. A person coping with the disease may be confused, anxious or distressed. By adapting the person’s surroundings and the way in which we communicate, most aggressive behaviors are preventable.

Myth: Nothing can be done about Alzheimer's Disease.

Fact: There are medications available which help delay and reduce the symptoms of Alzheimer's Disease.  Additionally, there are some preventative measures which can be taken to help reduce one's chances of the onset of  Alzheimer's Disease.  If you recognize the warning signs listed above, visit the physician without delay.  Early intervention is important.
